Doom is the arbiter of adventures.
No Doom wants to kill the characters that His players have laboriously raised (unless He derives subtle pleasure from it). When characters are missing there is no adventure anymore and players are unlikely to be willing to create new ones at each session (albeit character creation is a fun moment).
Then try, applying the rules, in the most objective and impartial way as possible, to avoid the death of a character.
