Background is what adventures written by Doom is based upon.
Each Background is identified according to a certain TD, by a Society with different forms of Government and Religion.
Entities (or Deities) grant then access to Energy under different forms, amongh which Connecting Gates among Different Space-Time Universes.
Adventures take then place in different Environments.
SvsE® standard background is Earth around 2010 A.D., known as 10 N.D., with a TD of 10, a widespread Technocracy divided in six big factions, with a highly Bureaucratic totalitarian Society and an absolute Monotheism.
Entities grant access to all Energy forms and one tells about existence of Gates in some remote region of the planet.
Environments in which adventures take place can be highly different.
