Check: Make a Maneuver Boats/Sailing Ships check once per hour while you are in the water. Success means you may advance at up to full boat speed.
If you fail by 4 or less, you make no progress through the water. If you fail by 5 or more, you swamp.
If you swamp, you must make a check per round to avoid sinking. If you pass three checks in a row you completely recover the boat control.
If you fail two checks in a row, you start sinking and you must make Swim checks unless you have another naval trasportation to embark in.
The DC for the Maneuver Boats/Sailing Ships check depends on the water, as given on the table below.
| Water | Maneuver Boats/Sailing Ships DC |
|---|---|
| Calm water | 10 |
| Rough water | 15 |
| Stormy water | 20§ |
§ You can’t take 10 on a Maneuver Boats/Sailing Ships check in stormy water, even if you aren’t otherwise being threatened or distracted.
Check is subject to modifiers due to weather and situation.
| Condition | DC Modifier | Condition | DC Modifier |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beautiful Weather | -2 | Typhoon | +10 |
| Rain | +1 | Fog/Intense Smoke | +5 |
| Strong Winds | +3 | Naval Combat | +0/+4 |
| Currents | +2/+4 |
Boats you can maneuver with this skill are: caravels, curraghs, drakkars, dromonds, galleys, knarrs, one-mast sailboats, three-masted galleons, three-masted yachts, two-masted sailboats, and viking ships.
Action: A successful Maneuver Boats/Sailing Ships check allows you to advance at full boat speed.
Untrained: Without training you cannot make Maneuver Boats/Sailing Ships checks with a DC higher than 10.
